Fans of war films will be pleased to hear a movie based on a heartbreaking book is available to stream for free now.
Originally released in 1998, the film follows William Beech, an evacuee who is set to live with Tom Oakley, a recluse who lives in a rural English village.
After escaping an abusive home, he learns to find love again. Veteran actor John Thaw stars in the film and he was praised for his performance.
The film in question is Goodnight Mister Tom, which is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Michelle Magorian.
It opens in September 1939, as Britain declares war on Nazi Germany, and William is sent off to Suffolk.
He is taken in by Tom, who has lived in solitude after losing his wife and child to scarlet fever.
Fans have taken to Google Reviews to share their thoughts, with Roy W commenting: “An incredibly moving and beautiful film. I’ve watched it many times. Lovely scenery and a great storyline.
“What a brilliant actor John Thaw was. He could convey so much emotion without saying a word. God bless him.”
Stephanie Robinson hailed it a ‘masterpiece’, sharing: “This film is a masterpiece. Captured so many moments of emotions to the watcher and also having a really good story line as well.
“Actors were so amazing and just everything about this movie was incredible.”
Commenting on the original source material, Glazed Lemon shared: “Honestly this is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
“It’s so touching and the author did a great job expressing the emotions and writing the details.
“I could almost feel like I’m in those situations while reading the book. And I can tell you how many times I cried reading this, and Mister Tom and Will being together is so touching and wholesome.”
The film won three major awards, including a BAFTA for Most Popular Television Programme in 1999.
In the same year, it won an NTA for Best Drama and a Television & Radio Industries Club Award.
