A 2022 book has been a hot topic in the reading world, with avid book-lovers unable to pry their hands away from its pages. The thriller will be made into a film, released in December 2025, following its success.

This exciting read is The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. On Goodreads, the novel has gained an impressive 4.25 score out of five with readers singing its praises in reviews.

A synopsis of the novel on Goodreads, says: “Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

“I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

“I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of…”

The book has been praised for its writing style which makes readers analyse what could be happening as the novel takes its twists and turns.

One reader on Goodreads said: “5/5 stars. I haven’t read a thriller in 3 years prior to this one so I didn’t really have high expectations but omg this was so good! It pulled me in from the first few chapters and I couldn’t stop reading.

“It was just so entertaining and it got me out of my reading slump. I can’t wait to read more books by this author! I’m officially obsessed!!!!”

Another penned: “Applause to Freida McFadden for writing The Housemaid. It’s a five-star read you don’t want to miss!”

A third added: “I give “The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden a perfect 5/5 as this is a masterpiece. I’ve read many novels in my life and this is one of the most memorable ones that will forever stand out for me.”

In December 2025, a film adaptation of the novel will be released, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried.

The author of the novel shared the announcement on Instagram which gained nearly 30,000 likes.

“I love when there’s so many unexpected twists and turns,” Sweeney said on stage at CinemaCon during Liongate’s presentation, adding that she appreciates “messy” characters.

Now is the perfect time to pick up the book before watching the film later this year.
