‘Masterpiece’ new horror film with 94% Rotten Tomatoes score ‘full of jump scares’

A brand-new horror release is already sending shivers down the spines of critics and audiences alike – and it has landed with one of the year’s strongest scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Weapons, which debuted in August 2025, comes from writer-director Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind 2022’s surprise horror hit Barbarian. His latest project has already been described as one of the most terrifying films of the year, combining relentless suspense with an eerie sense of unease.

The film arrives with a remarkable 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it among the most acclaimed horror releases in recent memory. Reviewers have highlighted both its originality and its ability to deliver genuine scares in an age where audiences think they’ve seen it all.

One early viewer admitted: “I’m honestly speechless. I knew I was watching a horror movie, but I was NOT prepared for what this hellish masterpiece had in store. Absolutely everything was cooked to perfection, 11/10.

“From the adorable lil’ narrator to the cast, perfectly timed jump scares, horrifying imagery, armrest gripping suspense & phenomenal storytelling, this movie is perfect for every horror lover on the planet.”

Another reaction praised just how unsettling the film feels even after leaving the cinema: “Haven’t felt this uneasy after watching a horror film in a VERY long time!! This movie left an impression on me and it’s a must-see.”

The praise has not been limited to the scares alone. Critics have emphasised how Weapons balances shocks with story, ensuring that the audience is invested in the characters before the true horror unfolds.

One fan review described it as: “One of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen in a very long time, must watch.”

While Cregger proved his talent for subverting horror expectations with Barbarian, his latest film has been noted as a leap forward both visually and narratively.

The production features a strong ensemble cast, – including Julia Garner, Amy Madigan, Josh Brolin and Benedict Wong – though much of the buzz has focused on the way the story is told – with twists, unnerving imagery, and moments designed to jolt even veteran horror fans from their seats.

Since its premiere, Weapons has generated a growing wave of word-of-mouth enthusiasm, with viewers recommending it as one of the rare modern horror experiences that manages to be both entertaining and deeply disturbing. Its success mirrors the trajectory of other recent genre-defining releases that crossed from cult favourite to mainstream hit.
