This comedy has earned a great reputation with an impressive score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans can’t praise this film enough and it’s one you can watch now on Amazon Prime.

In the film, an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island tries to make his fantasies come true by getting his favourite musicians to perform at his home. The Ballad of Wallis Island, which came out in May 2025, is a sentimental film which has warmed the hearts of its viewers.

One person who watched the film on Letterboxd said: “Such a charming & wonderful hidden gem of a film! i haven’t laughed that hard in forever”

Another penned: “The quintessential British combination of awkwardness, sadness, humour and heart.”

Another fan who gave the film five stars said: “I think this movie has a really interesting perspective on masculinity. These two men are suffering through grief and lost love, but are doing it in such different ways.

“They’re both hiding their true feelings and neither of them know how to talk about it, but together, wordlessly, they find a way forward and a mutual respect. This is a movie about growing up and moving on.”

The Conversation called the film a “masterpiece of the extraordinary made ordinary”.

It says: “With The Ballad of Wallis Island, Tom Basden and Tim Key have written a poignant and comical exploration of music, loss, nostalgia and hope.

“The film has been compared to Once (2007) and Local Hero (1983), similarly low-key films that put music at the heart of quiet personal transformations.”

One person who watched the film said it is “Oscar worthy but will pass unnoticed.

Directed by James Griffiths, you can’t miss giving this film a watch while it’s streaming.
