Fans of the romance in Pride and Prejudice or the sauciness of Bridgerton will love this series based on Jane Austen’s final, but incomplete, written work.
Sanditon is a TV show made up of three seasons, led by the unfinished manuscript of Jane Austen, found after her untimely death. Due to the story being unfinished, the first episode follows the true nature of the Austen novel, while the writers used the already established characters to develop the enticing story further for modern audiences.
A Rotten Tomatoes review said: “This show is a beautiful story with vivid characters that are so relatable. Jane Austen’s final, unfinished work was brought to life beautifully by all involved.
“And the chemistry between Rose Williams as Charlotte and Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Alexander was off the CHARTS. The entire cast was on point; the music, cinematography, scenery, scripts, etc. – everything was truly remarkable.”
Set during the charm and luxury of the Regency era, the series follows a young woman, Charlotte Heywood, as she navigates life at a brand-new seaside resort known as Sanditon. While she is keen to experience everything the resort has to offer, she quickly learns about the town’s scheming locals but can’t help but show interest in their secrets.
The first series sees Theo James play the hero, who wins over the innocent newcomer Charlotte’s heart. The two fall in love before an unfortunate ending that doesn’t see the return of his character for the second season.
Many viewers are praising the ensemble cast for their on-screen chemistry, especially those of Rose Williams, playing Charlotte, and Ben Lloyd-Hughes in season two as Alexander Colbourne. One review reads: “Masterful storytelling. Exquisite performances by Rose Williams and Ben Lloyd-Hughes establish Charlotte Heywood and Alexander Colbourne as an iconic Austen couple. Bring them back to tell more stories of their life in Sanditon.”
In agreement, another viewer wrote: “Season 1 is fresh and exciting. A unique take on Austen by the master of Austen adaptations, Andrew Davies.
“That said, it’s far from perfect and takes many liberties with the source material, but it’s bold, edgy, and sexy as hell (even though most of the characters keep their clothes on)”. It appears viewers are most impressed by the romances woven into the storyline, like any good period drama.”
The third and final season shows Charlotte returning to Sanditon, now thriving, just in time for a huge celebration.
However, while she prepares to party, she is met with an awkward interaction with her ex-lover Alexander Colbourne, and all of the feelings come running back to her.
It’s the final season of the period drama that boasts the highest score on Rotten Tomatoes at an impressive 100%. With this in mind, one critic for The Times wrote: “After a tame series one and two, Sanditon may finally have found its soul. And a flavour that at least faintly tastes of Jane Austen.
