A giant pothole is wreaking havoc on the 14 Freeway in the Antelope Valley, forcing major lane closures and snarling traffic for miles.
Caltrans crews are set to address the site in the southbound lanes just south of Palmdale Boulevard, where they’ll work to repair the hole, which officials say is large enough to damage vehicles.
The California Highway Patrol reports that lanes #2, #3 and #4 are closed, leaving only the #1 lane open.
Drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time or seek alternate routes.
The disruption adds to ongoing construction in the area. Scheduled nightly closures between 20th Street West and Avenue H (northbound) and Avenue F to Avenue H (southbound) will continue through Friday, April 10, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
A longer weekend closure is planned for southbound SR-14 from Avenue I to Avenue H starting Friday, April 24, at 10 p.m., lasting 55 hours.
Motorists in the Antelope Valley should expect significant backups and remain alert for sudden stops as crews work to get traffic moving safely.
