The former British Bake Off host has worked with Prince William and Princess Kate over the years and has spoken of her fondness for the couple. In particular, Mary Berry has described the caring nature of the Prince for his wife over the years.
The baking icon said: “There’s always a little arm around the back, encouraging her. Early on, when she started doing public life, he would chip in and say something really nice and encouraging, you know? He’s obviously immensely proud of her.” The Prince of Wales has known Berry for more than a decade, as they both serve as patrons of the charity Child Bereavement UK. Both William and Kate also joined forces with Mary for her 2019 BBC special, ‘A Very Berry Christmas’.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Mary also described the good work conducted by Prince William, referencing his work with the homeless.
She said: “I mean he’s really such a wonderful man, you know. We’re so lucky with our royalty, aren’t we?”
She added: “He slept on the streets, you know. He wants to find out about how everybody is in the country. He lives for all of us. I admire him. He sets an example.”
The Prince of Wales also has fond feelings for the Bake Off legend as he recorded a special video message for her 90th birthday back in March. The video said: “I want to wish you a very happy 90th birthday. You are a true national treasure, and we’ve loved working with you over the years.”
William added: “I dread to think who’s cooking your cake and the criticism they might get but good luck and I hope it goes really well.”
The 90-year-old baking whiz was a judge on the fan-favourite show between 2010 and 2016, with many considering her to be a ‘national treasure.’
After Mary decided to take a step back from the show, co-host, Paul Hollywood, was joined by Dame Prue Leith in the Bake Off tent.
Speaking fondly of the show, Mary also revealed: “I didn’t want a drama, a cry or whatever. I wanted to be encouraging. If they took it out of the oven and it went down in the middle – I didn’t want to criticise them.”
