Despite middling reviews, Marvel Rivals has proven to be a much bigger success than Concord, racking up more than 10 million downloads since launching earlier this month.
With a decent roster of heroes and villains, not to mention an appealing price tag (it’s free), Marvel Rivals looks like it could be a long-running franchise, provided developer NetEase keeps it updated with new content, in-game events and bonus rewards. (Cross-promotions with Fortnite will also help its profile.)
And it looks like NetEase is planning to do just that, because less than a week after it made its debut on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, Marvel Rivals is adding new versions of popular characters to the item shop.
Fans will soon be able to purchase a Love and Thunder version of Thor, as well as Star Lord’s Master of the Sun costume.
Thor Love & Thunder and Star Lord Master of the Sun have been given a December 13 release date in Marvel Rivals. Fans can grab the costumes from 7am GMT UK time.
Star Lord’s costume first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (2020) #9, while Thor’s new outfit made its debut in the 2022 Marvel Studios film.
NetEase explains more: “Lucky is an understatement to describe Peter Quill’s second chance at life.
“Free from his past life with the chance to complete himself, he was granted the title of Star-Lord.
“Despite his yearning to explore Morinus, Star-Lord was set on going back home, until he discovered that he was home on Morinus all along. As he mastered the circle, also known as the orbit of the self, he finally became the Master of the Sun.”
Thor’s Love and Thunder costume has an electrifying look, which you can see for yourself in the trailer below.
In addition to Thor and Star Lord, Marvel Rivals features a wealth of popular characters, including Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Loki.
That’s on top of lesser known heroes and villains like Jeff the Land Shark, Cloak and Dagger, Squirrel Girl and Namor.
Other playable characters include Adam Warlock, Black Panther, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, Groot, Hawkeye, Hela, Iron Fist, Luna Snow, Magik, Magneto, Mantis, Moon Knight and Peni Parker.
The game launched with three game modes, including Convoy, Domination, and Convergence. Expect more to be added at a later date.
It also features destructible environments, as well as double team moves depending on your characters. For example, Rocket Raccoon can ride on the back of Groot, while Hulk can charge Iron Man’s armour.
