This type of noise went unheard for a long time. 

For 56 years, to be specific. 

The decibel levels Knicks fans have reached at Madison Square Garden this postseason bring Marv Albert — the voice of the Knicks from 1967-2004 — all the way back to May 8, 1970, when, in the most famous moment in Knicks history, Willis Reed jogged out onto the court for warmups with his torn thigh muscle. 

Albert’s commentary, saying, “Here comes Willis, and the crowd is going wild,” lives in Knicks lore. The volume Knicks fans reached when they saw Reed emerge became the stuff of legend.
