Maro Itoje warns Wallabies as Lions chase ‘dream’ series sweep in Aust | Rugby | Sport

Skipper Maro Itoje has warned the Wallabies the best is yet to come from his Lions as they seek a clean sweep in Sydney tomorrow (Saturday). Itoje’s side clinched the series in Melbourne last week but the second row insists there is more in the locker after the second Test cliff-hanger.

The tourists have not been shy of declaring they after a 3-0 series win ever since they landed in Australia and Itoje has urged them to deliver on the boasts. The captain said: “We want to be part of something very special. Winning a Lions Test series is extremely special but what would be an absolute dream would be to go out there and perform to the level that we think we can perform and win the third game.

“While the first two games have been great because we got two wins, there’s a still a feeling that we haven’t put it together in a way we know that we can. We want to chase down the performance we have been searching for.”

If they do get over the line it would be the first time the Lions have whitewashed the Wallabies in a three-Test series since 1904.

“We owe it to ourselves,” said Itoje. “We owe it to each other to give the best account of ourselves. This will already be a memorable tour but we want it to live really long in the memory. Part of the way of doing that is getting the win.”

Assistant coach John Dalziel added: “It’s the only way to end this now. We don’t want anything to derail it. We’ve got to find that energy and go again. We’ve had 40 minutes in both of the Tests, we want to give our supporters and everyone watching at home a full 80 minutes and show what the Lions are about.”
