A teenager was allegedly sexually assaulted in a city centre park and police have launched an urgent appeal. Investigating officers have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to identify following the reported attack on Saturday, August 16.
Avon and Somerset Police said the victim was sexually assaulted in St James’ Park, in Bristol, at around 10pm. They have since carried out forensic enquiries and are now appealing to the public for help. The victim is being supported by specially-trained officers and has been referred to services that support people who have suffered sexual violence.
The initial report to police included the description of a man aged in his 30s, of Asian heritage, and around 5ft 4-6ins tall. He was said to be wearing black clothing and in possession of a black rucksack at the time.
Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak with following the reported sexual assault. They are urging anyone who can identify him to get in touch as soon as possible.
DC Channon Dayus, officer in the case, said: “This is an awful incident which has caused distress and upset for the victim and her family.
“We would like to assure the community that while we have not received any similar reports involving other victims, one incident is too many and a full investigation is underway.
“The CCTV enquiries we have carried out since this awful sexual assault have resulted in us wishing to identify the man, pictured.
“We are always conscious of the impact publicity of such offences can have on victims, but we’ve not been able to identify this man ourselves and therefore we now are seeking the public’s support because finding out who this man in will help us to progress this investigation.”
St James’ Park is a former churchyard in the centre of Bristol and features grassy areas and historic monuments. It is divided by a walkway that connects the busy Broadmead area and Bristol Bus Station.
