Despite a rocky start to the season, Manchester United are standing by manager Ruben Amorim with the 40-year-old showing no signs of stepping down. It seems only a disastrous result against Sunderland could shake this resolve as we head into the international break. Rumours about Amorim’s future have been rife following last weekend’s defeat to Brentford, with United’s performances so far this season leaving much to be desired.
The Red Devils have managed just two victories in their first seven matches across all competitions and currently sit 14th in the Premier League. They’ve accumulated a mere seven points, a disappointing follow-up to their 15th place finish last season. As Sunderland prepare to visit Old Trafford, chatter has increased about the potential threat to Amorim’s position should United suffer another defeat.
The Black Cats have had an encouraging start since their return to the Premier League, securing three wins and two draws in their six matches.
However, David Ornstein, speaking to NBC Sports, suggested that even a loss might not seal Amorim’s fate, provided it wasn’t too severe. There is a general expectation that he will retain his position.
It’s understood that United still have faith in the Portuguese manager, who is committed to turning the club’s fortunes around. Both parties recognise the need for improved results, and it’s noted that the squad also supports the head coach.
Financial considerations related to sacking Amorim are reportedly not influencing any decisions regarding his future at the club.
Should a switch occur, Gareth Southgate is unlikely to feature in any potential recruitment process. The 55-year-old has remained without employment since stepping down from his England role in July 2024.
Amorim has acknowledged he anticipates a ‘really tough match’ against Sunderland. The Black Cats secured a 1-0 triumph at Nottingham Forest in their previous outing.
“It’s going to be a really tough match, they are doing really well,” Amorim said. “And then, when you see the games, they draw with one less player in the final [moments] of the game, they draw, [get] one point, and then they win in the final play against Brentford, [to get] another three points.
“I think the details are changing the table a lot, so we need to pay attention to that. It’s a team that plays really well, it’s a clear 4-3-3 system with a lot of rotations in the side of the pitch.
“They are confident and they know that we are going to be under pressure and we need to be able to play with that and we are prepared for a tough, tough match.”
