Several Manchester United players have sent their congratulations to Marcus Rashford following his Supercopa de Espana triumph on Sunday. Barcelona secured the trophy for the second consecutive season- their 16th overall – defeating arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-2 at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The 28-year-old Rashford, who transferred to Barcelona on loan from United last summer, entered the match as a second-half substitute and played his part in securing another memorable victory over Real. The England international nearly got himself on the scoresheet too, breaking through on goal in the dying moments but failing to keep his effort on target.
However, the miss proved inconsequential to the final outcome, as Barca celebrated their fifth El Clasico triumph in six encounters and lifted the Super Cup yet again. Following the match, Rashford shared his delight on social media about the achievement.
Posting six photographs of himself celebrating the victory, Rashford wrote: “SUPER CUP CHAMPIONS [raised hands emoji and trophy emoji]. What a way to start the year! ! [blue circle emoji and red circle emoji].”
A number of Rashford’s United colleagues responded with supportive messages in the comments. Among them was Harry Maguire, with the Red Devils defender writing: “Love it mate [clapping hands emoji].”
Bruno Fernandes was among those offering congratulations, with the United skipper writing: “Congratulations my brother [red love heart emoji].”
Joshua Zirkzee chimed in with: “Congratulations brother [red love heart emoji]”, whilst 15-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel, who has featured in first-team training sessions, simply added a fire emoji.
Rashford’s post garnered over one million likes, with approval coming from the likes of Fernandes, Tyrell Malacia, Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw, Rasmus Hojlund, Diogo Dalot, Anthony Martial and Andre Onana.
Since his switch to Barcelona, Rashford has made his mark with seven goals and 11 assists across 27 appearances. Yet recent weeks have seen him in and out of the starting line-up, with Raphinha being favoured down the left flank.
The preference for Raphinha comes as little shock, particularly after the ex-Leeds United attacker netted twice for Barcelona in Sunday’s clash against Real. Robert Lewandowski also found the back of the net for Hansi Flick’s outfit.
In his post-match remarks, Flick was visibly delighted, commenting: “It’s excellent, it was an important final, against Real Madrid it’s always excellent. I’m proud, we played the way we wanted.
“I wasn’t in the dressing room, they’re celebrating now and I only saw them dancing. I’m very proud, we played very well, keeping possession and controlling the game. And in the end, the whole team played the way we like, it wasn’t easy and we fought as a team, it’s impressive.”
Barcelona have a £26million option to turn Rashford’s loan move into a permanent deal, but they are anticipated to try and negotiate that figure down later in the season.
