Manchester United reportedly have a mice problem at Old Trafford. Hygiene inspectors discovered mouse droppings on a recent inspection of the Premier League club’s stadium.
It is claimed that evidence of mouse activity was found in corporate suites and in a kiosk selling food to fans on matchdays. United were subsequently handed a two-star hygiene rating, well short of the maximum of five.
The hygiene inspectors have ordered improvements to be made. United previously had a four-star rating prior to the incident.
Club chiefs are working with pest control partners and the local council to resolve the issue. The problem is said to be linked to the stadium’s proximity to a canal and a railway line. It is a particular dilemma in the winter as the rodents seek warmer areas.
United had previously seen their hygiene rating slashed to a dismal one star after visitors on a corporate event were served uncooked chicken. It was subsequently raised to four stars. The vast majority of Premier League clubs boast a five-star hygiene rating.
It is claimed that pest controllers are visiting Old Trafford four to five times per week.
A club spokesperson told the Daily Mail: “Manchester United implements a robust pest-control system throughout Old Trafford.
“Multiple weekly checks are made in all catering areas and stringent measures are taken to ensure levels of hygiene and cleanliness are high wherever food is stored, prepared and served.
“If incidences of this nature do occur at the stadium, immediate and appropriate action is taken.”
A spokesperson for Trafford Council added: “Our environmental health officers gave a food hygiene rating of two following a routine visit. We are now working closely with Manchester United to ensure it complies with the rating and carries out the necessary improvements.”
INEOS have inherited a range of problems with Old Trafford. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is currently in the process of deciding whether to build an entirely new venue or redevelop their current home, which was built in 1910.
Water dripped from the roof during Ruben Amorim’s press conference after United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth on Sunday. Leaks have been commonplace at Old Trafford and are a source of amusement for visiting supporters.
On the pitch, INEOS are looking at a major overhaul of Amorim’s squad after a tricky first month for the new head coach. It is unclear whether many of the players fit the Portuguese tactician’s 3-4-2-1 formation, which he has insisted on sticking to despite the inconsistency in his side’s performances.
