The mid-season market poses challenges for clubs looking to sign replacements, and if Zirkzee were to depart, it’s believed that United would be left short-handed.
But there are three reasons which demonstrate why the Reds should approve the transfer.
Firstly, United have a promising player rising through their ranks who could immediately step into the role of cover. Chido Obi has been lauded since his move to Old Trafford from Arsenal and served as a back-up for United last season.
This year, he has continued his impressive development in the academy, even scoring in Tuesday night’s victory over Rochdale’s first-team.
Increased exposure to United’s senior environment will undoubtedly benefit the 17-year-old, without necessarily impacting his playing time for the academy.
This brings us to the second reason. Given the recent success of the strikerless system, Obi may not be called upon frequently.
In the match against Liverpool, Matheus Cunha leading the attack with Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo supporting him caused numerous issues for Arne Slot’s squad. Had it not been for Mount’s injury, we might have seen this trio in action against Brighton.
It’s evident that this system is effective and currently, it takes precedence over starting Zirkzee. The final argument for approving the transfer request is to aid Zirkzee.
The player had a challenging first season and was unjustly singled out during a disappointing defeat to Newcastle over Christmas 2024. However, he showed resilience, improved his performances since that day.
Zirkzee is no longer in the plans, and Amorim should do right by him and permit his departure.
