Tottenham have reportedly failed in their bid to sign Mathys Tel, leaving the door open for Manchester United and Arsenal to capture the Bayern Munich star.
The north London outfit reportedly submitted a £50.1million offer on Thursday, which was accepted by the Bundesliga giants after Tel revealed his desire to leave in talks with Vincent Kompany.
But according to reports in France, Tel has ‘refused’ to join Tottenham after mulling over the move with his family.
L’Equipe report that after turning down Spurs, there are Premier League clubs locked in talks with the player’s camp – suggesting he could still move to England in the coming days.
The 19-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe, with Spurs also joined by Arsenal, Chelsea and United in admiring the promising forward.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou had remained coy over his purported interest in bringing in the teenager before the transfer deadline on February 3 when asked by reporters on Thursday.
“I can’t tell you anything about Tel,” Postecoglou said, after watching his side beat Elfsborg 3-0 in the Europa League.
“I am focusing on getting the team ready [to face Brentford on Sunday]… other people are working in the background.”
Tel is yet to score in the Bundesliga this season with 13 appearances in all competitions, although he has only been afforded two league starts by head coach Kompany.
Chelsea were linked with the French starlet earlier in the window, with a potential swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku weighed up.
However, their interest in Tel has since cooled with United starlet Alejandro Garnacho lined up instead.
If the Blues do sanction a late move for Garnacho, it could free up funds for United to push through a move for Tel in the final days of the window.
