Most Brits love a weekend treat from their local chippy – keeping our national dish, fish and chips, well and truly alive. Whether you’re in the mood for scampi or a traditional battered fish, there’s an abundance of options, with more than 10,000 chippies located throughout the UK.
But, as many will know, most chippies don’t exclusively serve seafood, as you’ll frequently find burgers, battered sausages and sometimes even kebabs and desserts featured on the menu. Despite this, most individuals will have a fixed chippy meal they consistently choose when indulging themselves with a takeaway.
Nevertheless, one man from Northern Ireland decided to request something different during his recent visit to his neighbourhood chippy, but matters didn’t quite unfold as anticipated. “If you ordered an egg burger from a chip shop, what would you expect to get?” he asked Reddit users in his post before explaining what had occurred.
None the less, he added it wasn’t a complaint, as they laughed when they realised what they’d recieved. He went on to recount that he and his partner had purchased food from a chippy.
He personally had chosen an 8oz burger with onions, mayonnaise and thousand island sauce, whilst his partner had requested an egg burger.
Whilst it might sound odd, the Redditor clarified that they’d anticipated receiving a beef patty with an egg positioned on top. Instead, they received a substantial shock when they unwrapped their order at home.
“When I collected the order and returned home we discovered they just put an egg in a burger bun,” he said. “Like I said, we didn’t complain, because we thought it was funny.
“But should I have been more specific when ordering or should the chip shop ask a follow up question to make sure they got it right?” he continued.
The post sparked a lively debate in the comments section, with users unable to reach a consensus on what an “egg burger” actually is. “It’s a chippy, I’d expect anything from a plain burger with a fried egg to a deep friend burger with an omelette,” one person said.
Another user chimed in with their expectation, writing: “Fried egg in a bun. But looks like I’m the only one who would expect that!” However, another countered: “That’s an egg butty to me. Sounds dumb but it needs a burger to be an egg burger!”
Yet another commenter suggested they’d anticipate it to be “a burger with an egg on”. This seemed to resonate with several others, as another pointed out: “This is the answer! If it was just an egg in a roll I’d expect it to say ‘egg bap’ or ‘egg roll’. The word burger implies that it includes a patty, likely beef.”
“I’ve never heard the term egg burger! So a blank look is what I’d expect,” another added.
One final user stated: “I wouldn’t order such a thing, but for the sake of the question – I would ask what it actually is before ordering, as I have never in my life heard of an egg burger.”
