A man has been charged for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman while she was sunbathing at a popular UK beach. The alleged attack occurred on August 25, when the woman, 50, was at Camber Sands, near Rye, said Sussex Police.
Mohammed Maatoug, a 33-year-old resident of Boxley Road in Maidstone, Kent, has been formally charged with sexual assault by penetration following an alleged incident at Camber Sands beach. He appeared before magistrates in Brighton, where the court decided to remand him in custody. A further hearing is scheduled for October 7, where the case will continue to be reviewed and legal proceedings will advance.
In a statement, the force said: “A woman in her 50s reported being sexually assaulted by a man as she sunbathed in the dunes at Camber Sands, Rye, around 5.30pm on 25 August.
“An investigation was launched and on Saturday, 33-year-old Mohammed Maatoug, of Boxley Road, Maidstone, was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault by penetration.
“He was subsequently charged and remanded in custody at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Maatoug will next appear at a court to be confirmed on 7 October.”
Camber Sands is a stunning stretch of sandy beach located in East Sussex, near the historic town of Rye. Unlike most beaches along the Sussex coast, which are typically pebbled, Camber Sands boasts miles of soft, golden sand and is home to the only sand dune system in East Sussex.
The beach spans nearly five miles and offers plenty of space for sunbathing, sandcastle building, and activities like kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Its natural beauty and unspoiled landscape have also made it a favorite filming location over the years, appearing in movies like The Theory of Everything and The Monuments Men.
Camber Sands is easily accessible from London, making it a top choice for day trips and weekend getaways.
