Man abandons disgusting van in road – but locals have last laugh

A man who left his mouldy van to rot in a street has been hit with a hefty fine, much to the amusement of local residents.

Mark Adams dumped his Fiat van on Netherton Road, off Boothferry Road, Hull, in July last year. He was taken to court by Hull City Council earlier this month.

The council had received reports that the vehicle had been abandoned and found out it didn’t have a current MoT certificate or vehicle excise licence. They identified Adams, from Fernhill Road, Hull, as the registered owner of the van.

Despite being contacted by the council, Adams failed to move the van, leading the council to step in and remove it. They sent him further letters, including how to get the van back, the charges for its recovery and a £200 fine.

When they got no response, the council took the matter to court. Adams didn’t show up at court on February 16 and was fined in his absence for unlawfully abandoning a vehicle, reports Mirror Online.

He was told to pay fines and costs totalling £1,184.

Hull City Council is telling the public to not leave their cars dumped or they could get a big fine or even be taken to court. If you drop off a car where it shouldn’t be, that’s breaking the law under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978.

But if you’ve got an old car you don’t want, the council will take it away for free.

Councillor Julia Conner, who looks after the environment, said: “Abandoning a vehicle is a crime that we do not tolerate in Hull. This reckless behaviour not only harms the environment but also poses health and safety risks to our residents.

“The council urges everyone to follow lawful procedures for vehicle disposal to avoid being fined or prosecuted. We also urge residents to report any suspicious activity promptly.”
