The City of Malibu issued an urgent evacuation warning to more than 30 properties along the coastline while declaring a local emergency after a massive sinkhole appeared on Tuesday.
The city made the decision after consulting LA County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department, as the sinkhole “restricts vital access for residents and emergency services,” a statement read.
Malibu warned that high tides and rain were likely to worsen conditions in the area.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for 31 properties along Sea Level Drive. A temporary shelter was opened at Malibu High School for the affected properties.
The orders came as the sinkhole opened in front of actor Nicholas Cage’s $10.5 beachfront property.
