Lots of people love eggs, but cooking them can be tricky.

When it comes to poaching them it can be tough to get the whites firm while ensuring the yellow yolk is super oozy. It’s a trick that many of us hope to master.

Thanks to TV chef Gordon Ramsay, we could now be a step closer to perfection. According to the cook, it’s all about adding a simple ingredient to the water when you’re poaching.

He revealed how to make the eggs on TikTok, and budding chefs are thrilled he’s finally shared his secret. To start, he said you need to begin by gently boiling the water.

Lightly season the water, and then add in a little vinegar. He said this will help to “strengthen” the egg white, and will also enrobe the white around the yolk. Gently stir the water before you think of adding anything to the pan.

In the clip, he said: “Take your egg, and very carefully crack it into the bowl. In a bowl allows you lower it into the water gently. So, in, and lower it in, let it go.

“What happens now is that egg white starts to wrap around the egg yolk, and encases this beautiful poached egg that makes it look almost like a ball of mozzarella. Keep the water gently rolling, a gentle soft boil, and then just turn it down.

“Turn that over, presentation side up. Very carefully bring it out onto tissue paper, and then very carefully use the back of the spoon. Use the paper, and lift that up very carefully. And that’s how to poach an egg.”

The video has been viewed over 70,000 times since it was shared and people were quick to comment. Many wanted to share their thoughts and personal methods.

One person said: “It’s amazing how difficult people find poaching an egg.” Another wrote: “This man made me realise I was doing poached eggs right. Presentation side up. Most important.”

A third also replied: “I make my poached eggs in exactly the same way. Now I have to practice the hand movements.”

Meanwhile, one more commented: “There’s the technique. Lowering it in.”

In the video, Gordon doesn’t say how long it takes to poach an egg. However, most experts suggest three minutes for firm whites and runny yolks. If you prefer your yolks firmer, cook them for closer to four minutes.
