If you’re mulling over a getaway to Majorca (known locally as Mallorca) this year, you may wish to take note of some insider tips from a recent visitor to the hotspot.
Ella Kahan, who jetted off to the largest of the Balearic Islands earlier in the month, turned to TikTok to pass on her wisdom to potential holidaymakers.
Data from abc-Mallorca indicates that over 3.5 million Brits flocked to the island in 2023, despite a slight 3.2% dip compared to the previous year. The UK still accounts for the second-largest contingent of visitors to this popular destination.
“These are the five things you need to know before travelling to Majorca, Spain,” she initiated in her video post.
Size
“The first thing you should know is Majorca is way bigger than you think and everything is pretty spread apart,” Ella advised. She suggests booking accommodation near the top attractions on your list to make the most of your stay.
“Some beaches and towns are up to an hour from each other,” she added.
Palma
Despite Palma being the largest city and the most populous on the island, Ella doesn’t deem it a must-visit for your Majorcan trip. “I personally don’t think you need more than one night or a day trip to Palma,” she disclosed.
And her reasoning? “It’s really hot and crowded,” she commented. “And it’s personally not my favourite area.”
Getting around
Ella’s third tip is a strong recommendation to “definitely” rent a car for getting around. She pointed out that “getting to and from places isn’t easy and taxis in some places are non-existent,” hence the advantage of having your own vehicle.
“So you’re better off getting a car and exploring your way around that way,” she said. However, she warns that finding parking near popular beaches can be tricky, advising holidaymakers to allocate plenty of time for this.
“Once you park, it’s usually quite a hike down to the beach,” Ella continued, suggesting to come prepared for a trek with water and a towel.
On top of that, Ella emphasised the importance of swim shoes, expressing regret for not purchasing them. “I would also recommend swim shoes – I regret not buying them so much,” she confessed. “They look really silly, but they are integral to walking on the rocks on the beaches here.”
She described the beaches as “quite rustic” and recommended visiting a beach club like Grand Follies or a posh hotel with beach access for a more refined experience.
Trams
Discussing public transport, Ella admitted her view might be seen as “controversial”, sharing her less-than-ideal experience with the Soller tram during peak season. “In August it is brutally hot and crazy crowded and literally feels like Disney World,” she remarked.
Boating
Lastly, Ella touched on the topic of boating, considering it well worth the adventure. “I think it’s important to splurge for a boat day,” she advised. “There are so many cool beaches to see and it’s just easier to see them by boat.”
