Sainsbury’s has launched its “biggest ever price match” by bringing prices in line with low-cost supermarket Aldi on over new 100 products. The supermarket chain said it has matched its prices with its German rival on everything from shower gel and cotton wool to picnic dips, feta cheese and selected bottles of wine. That means, for the first time, Sainsbury’s has price-matched with Aldi on more than 800 products.
Richard Crampton, Sainsbury’s Commercial Director for Fresh and Convenience, said: “With household costs going up, we’re working tirelessly to keep prices low for customers when doing their big shop at Sainsbury’s. With the biggest ever Aldi Price Match, we’re introducing hot weather favourites such as dips, ice cubes and fizz as well as family staples such as shower gel, cotton wool and period care, ensuring shoppers budgets can go even further this summer.”
Listing the areas the supermarket is price-matching on, the retailer said that “household essentials” were seeing a “value boost”.
“Shower gel, handwash, cotton wool and for the first time, period care, all now price matched to Aldi”, Sainsbury’s said.
It added that “family favourites” like bacon, sausages, feta, and pet food, were also price-matched, as were foods “perfect for picnics”.
“Houmous and tzatziki, alongside classic summer favourites like quiche, sausage rolls and pork pies, and ice cubes”, are all on the price match list.”
What’s more, the supermarket said it is “expanding the variety of red, white, and sparkling wines price matched to Aldi, including Champagne, Cava, and Prosecco for the first time”.
The latest sweep of price matches may be in response to Aldi’s strong recent commercial performance.
The budget supermarket claimed 11% of the UK market for the time, according to the latest figures from the 12 weeks to March 23.
