Car manufacturing giant Ford has issued an urgent safety recall affecting nearly 200,000 of its vehicles, following serious concerns that passengers could become trapped in rear seats during a crash.
The alert, issued by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), primarily affects Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs built between 2021 and 2025. Ford has urged owners of the affected vehicles to return them for immediate inspection and potential repair.
According to NHTSA findings, the defect could prevent rear seat occupants from being able to exit the vehicle in the event of a crash, which is a critical safety risk, particularly in emergency situations.
In addition to the Mach-E recall, Ford is also recalling around 2,272 of its 2025 Bronco SUVs due to a separate issue linked to airbag deployment, Mail Online reports. The flaw could hinder the airbags from functioning properly during an accident, posing an added risk to drivers and passengers.
These recalls come just days after the manufacturer announced it was recalling over 1 million vehicles due to faults with the rear-view camera system in cars equipped with the SYNC 4 infotainment system.
The issue, which causes the camera to freeze, lag, or fail to activate in reverse, has been labelled a “significant risk to road safety” by Ford, with at least one reported crash already linked to the problem.
Among the models affected by the camera recall are the Ford F-150 (2021–2024), Bronco (2021–2024), Edge (2021–2024), and the Mustang Mach-E (2021–2023), among others.
Ford has assured owners that the camera issue can be resolved via a software update, without the need to visit dealerships.
This latest development adds to a growing list of Ford recalls in recent months.
In May, over 270,000 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles were recalled due to potential brake system failures. Earlier in February, around 240,000 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models were recalled over seat belt issues.
Data suggests Ford currently leads the US automotive industry in total recall notices.
Between January 2024 and March 2025, the company issued 94 recalls affecting approximately 5.69 million vehicles.
