Major airline to bring back popular UK flight to US for first time in six years | Travel News | Travel

For the first time in six years, a major US airline will restore nonstop flights between one of Scotland’s most popular cities with New York. United Airlines is set to reconnect Glasgow with the Newark/New York via a nonstop daily service from May 8 until September 23 as part of a major expansion of its transatlantic network announced this week.

The flights will operate on a Boeing 737-MAX 8, offering a direct link to one of the world’s busiest hubs, with onward connections across North America. The move marks a significant boost for Scotland’s international connectivity and business links with the United States. Though United already offers a year-round route from Edinburgh, this will become the only non-stop service between Glasgow and the US. This route restoration is part of a wider summer expansion of United’s European network. New seasonal destinations from Newark/New York will include Split in Croatia, Italy’s Bari, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This makes United the only US airline to serve those cities directly.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “The United States remains one of our most important trading partners, and with the east coast of America a priority export market for the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, this news will strengthen efforts in attracting inward investment and international trade.”

Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, added: “With the addition of these new flights and the return of all of our new routes from last year, United now flies to 46 cities across the Atlantic – more than any other airline – and is the clear flag carrier of the US.”

Additional developments in United’s long-haul network include its first ever service between Washington-Dulles and Iceland’s Reykjavik, a new year-round daily flight between Newark and Seoul and increased frequency on the Newark-Tel Aviv route, increasing this to 18 flights per week.

This announcement comes as UK flag carrier airline British Airways announced it was also growing its transatlantic network by launching fresh direct flights from London to the US in 2026. The new flight route will connect London Heathrow to St Louis, a major city in Missouri situated at the centre of the Midwest.

Its flights to the destination are due to commence on April 19, 2026 and will run four times weekly during the summer months. The St. Louis launch also coincides with the 100th anniversary of Route 66 – the famous highway that begins in Chicago, passes through St. Louis and continues to Los Angeles.

Elsewhere, Ryanair has announced a new route from Teesside International Airport to Malaga as part of its new winter schedule, which includes nine new destinations. The eight other destinations launching from Malaga will be Bratislava in Slovakia, Lübeck and Münster in Germany, Stockholm Västeras in Sweden, Warsaw in Poland and three Czech Republic flight routes.

Ryanair’s full winter 2025/2026 schedule is now available for booking online, with flights to and from Malaga starting from €24.99 (£21.70) for travel until the end of March 2026.
