The M25 in Kent has been closed clockwise between J3 (M20, Swanley) and J4 (Orpington) on December 18 due to a serious collision, National Highways said.
The incident prompted the arrival at the scene of emergency services, including Kent Police.
National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management, the organisation said.
The road is expected to remain shut into the afternoon, as investigations into the incident are to take place, leading to serious delays.
Shortly after 10.45am, had been already reported four miles of queues anti-clockwise and six clockwise, leading to a 10-mile buildup.
