Prime Minister Keir Starmer has congratulated Luke Littler on a “mesmerising” performance and becoming world champion after a stunning 7-3 final victory over Michael van Gerwen.

The teenager went one better than last year when he captured the hearts of a nation, reaching the final of the World Darts Championship, before returning to the same stage and reaching the pinnacle of his sport.

Littler led from start to finish as he dismantled the three-time world champion who stood alongside him at the oche, before the ribbons fell from above and he burst into tears at the incredible achievement.

Shortly after the 17-year-old held the Sid Waddell Trophy aloft inside Alexandra Palace, the Labour leader took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to send a message to darts’ biggest superstar.

“Mesmerising performance from @LukeTheNuke180 to win the World Darts Championship,” Starmer wrote. “Congratulations Luke on being the youngest ever PDC World Darts Champion. An inspirational performance under such pressure to lift the trophy.

“You should be really proud of what you’ve achieved tonight, not just for yourself but for the sport of darts as a whole.”
