An airport baggage handler revealed the item you shouldn’t pack when going abroad this summer. Millions of Brits will take flights this summer, with many escaping to sunny destinations such as Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy. Most of them will travel through an airport to get where they are going and will have to go through airport security. For those who will be boarding flights this summer, there is one item they should make sure isn’t in their suitcase.
Baggage handler John, who works at Dublin Airport in Ireland, told RSVP Live that passengers should avoid having marzipan in their suitcases. This is because of how it appears when it goes through security screening machines. In fact, this food item can come up in security machines as an explosive, due to its dense make-up. It can have a density of around 8-11 ounces per cup, experts have said.
John revealed: “Don’t ever pack Marzipan in your luggage. It has the same density as some explosives, so your bag will be removed and you’ll be called from the plane for a bag search.”
He added: “If the bag can’t be scanned automatically, it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight.”
Additionally, John says that there are a number of steps that passengers should take before arriving at the airport to reduce the likelihood of them being delayed at airport security. He tells tourists to take stickers off their bags before going through airport security because it can cause issues during the scanning process.
He also says that a common travel habit can cause problems at airport security. He revealed: “Ribbons that people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall.”
A separate travel expert recently advised passengers that they shouldn’t pack certain items. “Many travellers are caught out by having their items seized without realising they count as liquids, such as cosmetics like lip gloss and liquid eyeliner, or foods like sauces and jams,” said Cody Candee, CEO and founder of luggage storage company Bounce.com.
“If you can spread, smear, or squirt the item, it’s usually a liquid. If you’re unsure, either pack the item into your checked-in luggage or leave it behind.”
