A Michigan toddler pulled a loaded gun out of his backpack at daycare on Monday — sending staff into a panic to secure the weapon, according to police and reports.
The scary scene unfolded at Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton was all caught on camera and was “hard to watch,” Canton police Chief Joseph Bialy told WWJ.
“But I’m comforted by the fact that nobody was injured,” Bialy added.
“I’ve watched the video, and I’ve seen what their staff did, and they were prepared and ready to remove this firearm and keep all the kids safe there. And I commend them for their actions,” Bialy said.
No injuries were reported during the terrifying ordeal — and police told FOX 2 Detroit that the weapon was still inside its holster when staff intervened.
Authorities have not revealed how the tot obtained the loaded gun or who owns it.
One of the kid’s parents is a police officer in a nearby community. The other parent was arrested but hadn’t yet been charged, the Detroit Free Press reported, citing Bialy.
“We pride ourselves on being one of the safest centers in the Canton area. It is our priority,” said Children’s World Early Learning Center in a statement.
“Although this incident was out of our control, we are very proud of our staff and especially the teacher who responded so quickly. It was an unfortunate incident,” the statement continued.
“No one was hurt and all safety measures were followed. Because of our attention to safety and our strict adherence to protocols, we avoided what could have been a tragedy.”
Horrified neighbors expressed shock that a loaded firearm was brought anywhere near the young children.
“It’s a terrible thing to happen,” a neighbor told WWJ.
“The parent should’ve had more control of the firearm. It should’ve been at home, locked up in a safe and impossible for a kid to get near it,” the local added.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the matter.
Canton police and Children’s World Early Learning Center did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
