Liverpool manager Arne Slot expects Marcus Rashford to ‘show his quality’ now that he has left Manchester United for Aston Villa.
Rashford was frozen out by Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim from mid-December until he was finally offloaded at the end of the January transfer window. The 27-year-old has responded with two lively substitute appearances under Unai Emery, with his excellent free-kick rebounding off the crossbar for Ollie Watkins to tap in the equaliser against Ipswich Town at the weekend.
That contribution may have been enough to earn Rashford a start against Liverpool on Wednesday night. And he would surely relish the chance to get one over on the Reds, having played more than 400 games for their bitter rivals United.
In his press conference on Tuesday morning, Slot admitted he has been well aware of Rashford’s talent since Liverpool and United met in pre-season. At a time when Amorim is sorely lacking quality in attack, Slot believes they have let go of a player who will show what he is all about from now until the end of the season.
“I know Marcus Rashford because I follow the Premier League,” said the Dutchman. “But the first time I faced him in real life was the USA tour.
“I was really impressed by how fast he is, he has a nice height and he is comfortable with the ball. I hope he shows it at Villa. Not tomorrow. But I would be surprised if a player of this quality does not show it in the coming months.”
