Arne Slot has announced that British record signing Alexander Isak is set to return to Liverpool training on Friday, ahead of the Reds’ crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City this weekend. The £125million striker has been sidelined for Liverpool’s last four matches due to a groin problem.
However, following his recent call-up to the Swedish national team, Isak could potentially be included in Liverpool’s squad for their journey to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, the final match before the international break. During his press conference, however, the Liverpool head coach urged patience.
He said: “Isak will train with team again after three weeks out. I know I said his pre-season has ended a few weeks ago, but if you’ve had three weeks with rehab it doesn’t bring him back to the levels he was at.
“Even though our rehab has done an incredible job you can’t replicate games. Again, I have to say give him some time.”
Slot also addressed queries regarding the fitness of left-back Andy Robertson, who has participated in three matches within a week.
Regarding the Scotland captain, the Dutchman explained: “Robbo started three games in seven days as he started against Crystal Palace.
“I had to take him off towards the end (against Real Madrid). I felt he was tired but we will wait to see where he is today.”
Liverpool will be missing goalkeeper Alisson Becker and defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni for this weekend’s match.
However, Slot has confirmed that Alisson is poised to make a comeback for the home match against Nottingham Forest on November 22.
The Reds will be heading into the City game on a high, following an impressive 1-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid at home and a morale-lifting 2-0 win against Aston Villa. This ended the reigning champions’ streak of four consecutive Premier League losses.
