Over 17000 homes across London have been left without power overnight as an unexpected blaze tore through a power station in Hayes in scenes that could be seen for several miles. 

The incident, which is believed to have started shortly after 11pm prompted more than 190 calls to the London Fire Brigade, sparking an immediate response involving around 70 firefighters. 

Ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and 20 people have been evacuated from neighbouring properties while a 100-metre cordon has been put in place as a precaution. 

The first call to the blaze on Nestles Avenue in Hayes was received at 23:23 and crews from Hayes, Heathrow, Hillingdon, Southall and surrounding fire stations were mobilised to the scene. 

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
