Liam Neeson's rare 'emotional' family film with his real-life son is streaming for free

Liam Neeson’s touching comedy-drama film featuring his real-life son Micheál Richardson becomes available to watch for free from today (Tuesday, 4th November).

The celebrated Irish actor stepped away from his adrenaline-fuelled action blockbusters in 2020 to appear in actor James D’Arcy’s directorial debut in this charming yet often overlooked dramedy.

Neeson portrays widower Robert Foster, a quirky artist, who journeys to Italy to reconnect with his son, Jack (played by Richardson), whilst he endures a heartbreaking divorce from his wife, Ruth (Yolanda Kettle).

Jack is intent on purchasing the gallery owned by his wife’s parents through selling the Italian property he inherited from his father’s deceased wife, who perished in a car crash during his childhood.

Regrettably, the estate is entirely dilapidated, forcing Jack and his father to grudgingly reconcile and collaborate to restore it to its previous splendour, reports the Irish Mirror.

Whilst this subtle family drama might not set pulses racing like Neeson’s typical thriller offerings, it has cultivated a devoted following of admirers who unanimously agree it merits a leisurely afternoon viewing.

Made In Italy will broadcast Tuesday at 7:10pm on Film4, following which it becomes available to stream for free on Channel 4 for a limited period.

One IMDb reviewer gushed about the picture in a 10/10 assessment: “Absolutely brilliant and uncompromising beauty, cinematic and moving story, BEAUTIFUL!!

“Simply put if you want a beautiful film that will touch your heart and your funny bone watch this underrated gem!! Liam and his son are magical together!! MORE PLEASE!!!!!”

Another viewer identified flaws in the “predictable” plot, but conceded: “On the plus side, the Tuscan countryside is breathtaking. The rolling hills, vineyards, and charming towns are postcard-perfect.

“Liam Neeson delivers a heartfelt performance, and the father-son bonding, while predictable, is touching at times.

“If you want a relaxing watch with gorgeous views and a dash of heartwarming drama, Made in Italy might just be your cup of tea. Just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.”

Another person offered a comparable assessment: “A great, heartwarming film with the occasional comedic moment, but definitely not a comedy.

“A real change in typecast character for Liam Neeson too. And what can I say about the beautiful Tuscan views apart from absolutely amazing.”

A final glowing review noted: “Liam Neeson and his own son in real life. What a touching movie about loss.

“This is a loss they know too well after Liam’s wife and mother of Micheal, Natasha Richardson died tragically. I have always loved Liam, but this movie is so much more meaningful than his other work.”

Will you be giving this Mediterranean drama a go to illuminate the lengthy evenings ahead? Just ensure you’ve got tissues within reach.

Made In Italy airs Tuesday, 4th November at 7:10pm on Film4 and will be available to stream on Channel 4.
