Lewis Capaldi 'heading for No 1' in charts after Glastonbury comeback

Lewis Capaldi is “heading for a sixth No 1 single” following his surprise performance at the Glastonbury Festival. The Scottish singer had taken two years off before making a comeback on Friday with his emotional song, Survive.

Now, just 48 hours after releasing the single, the Official Charts have reported that Lewis is back in the top spot again, saying: “Lewis Capaldi is heading for a sixth No 1 single with emotional comeback track Survive. It’s currently leading by just over 3,000 chart units after 48 hours of release.” Lewis has knocked Ed Sheeran off the number one spot, who had been at the top for two weeks with Sapphire.

The ranking is based on preliminary sales and early streaming reports. As of June 29, Capaldi sits at number one. The Official Chart is broadcast live every Friday on BBC Radio 1 from 4pm to 5.45pm.

Glastonbury’s full impact on the Official Chart list is likely to become more apparent as the week goes on. If Lewis can hold onto the top spot until Friday, he will officially have a sixth No 1 single.

The Someone You Loved singer last performed at Glastonbury in 2023 but struggled to finish his set due to voice issues and the impact of his Tourette’s diagnosis.

Prior to his 2023 performance, he cancelled all his other touring commitments in June ahead of the festival at Worthy Farm to allow himself time to “rest and recover”.

Capaldi’s first-ever single, Someone You Loved, has also been tipped by the Official Charts Company to re-enter the Top 20. Survive has been described by Lewis’s team as “a bold and brave new anthem”.

The single includes the line: “I swear to God I’ll survive. If it kills me to, I’m gonna get up and try, if it’s the last thing I’ll do.” Lewis also fought back tears several times during his comeback show.

He said to the crowd: “The last three years haven’t been the best for me. It’s been a difficult time. This has been my f****** goal, to get back here doing this.”

He added: “The second time’s a charm. I’ve really, really missed doing this over the last few years. As I say, it’s been difficult at times to think that this maybe wouldn’t ever happen again. Genuinely from the bottom of my heart, it means the f****** world.”
