Lettuce won’t wilt and turn brown if stored with 1 item

Placing lettuce in the fridge is the go-to storage method most people go to, but the leafy green vegetable can quickly wilt, becoming soggy. If you are fed up of reaching for a slimy, soggy lettuce, there’s a simple way to stop this from happening.

Rather than throwing it out and buying a new head of lettuce, the way you store the vegetable can extend its shelf life by more than a fortnight. Foodie expert Nicole Modic – founder of Kale Junkie – revealed the food storage hack. Nicole said: “For this hack, all you need to do is start by cutting the stem off of your head of lettuce, then wrap the lettuce in a paper towel.”

The paper towel helps absorb any excess moisture to help prevent the lettuce leaves from wilting and becoming soggy.

For neatness, it’s advisable to store the lettuce (and the paper towel) in a food container.

However, be warned, the food container must not be closed shut or else moisture has no where else to escape.

Instead, ensure the container isn’t sealed (or the sandwich bag isn’t sealed shut, if you’re using that).

It’s also recommended to place the lettuce in the crisper drawer at the bottom of the fridge.

By storing lettuce in this way, the salad leaves should remain crisp and fresh for another two weeks.

This means you are helping to reduce food waste, are helping with your finances, and stoping the frustration of finding soggy lettuce in your fridge.
