The owners of a popular cafe had to issue a statement defending themselves after getting flak from “lefties” for welcoming Reform UK leader Nigel Farage for a coffee. Mr Farage visited Rosita’s while in Caerphilly on Friday for an event supporting the campaign of the Reform candidate in the town’s Senedd by-election later this month.
Rosita’s, which offers Welsh and Italian coffee and cuisine, posted a photo to its Facebook page of Mr Farage and his team outside the cafe and restaurant, with the caption: “Look who popped in for a coffee today… that got people talking!”. The post was met by more than 1,000 comments, with some accusing Rosita’s of supporting Reform and Mr Farage, while others claimed they will not be dining there again.
One person commented that they “will be eating elsewhere”, while another said: “I’d have asked him to leave. And then advertised that fact.”
A third person said “thank goodness he stayed outside… could have spoiled my afternoon”, while a fourth commented: “Good you advertised it as I know not to bother returning now, bit gutting as I thought you guys were better than supporting someone like this but look forward to visiting the other establishments in the area instead.”
Responding to the criticism, Rosita’s owners assured people they do not endorse any political parties.
They said in a statement: “A few have asked why we shared that Nigel Farage visited Rosita’s if we don’t endorse him. The simple answer is that it was interesting — just as it would be if Keir Starmer, or any other public figure, stopped by for a coffee tomorrow.
“During the visit, there were people who supported him and people who didn’t. People approached him from both sides, and conversations remained respectful — something that’s always good to see.
“Here at Rosita’s, we believe in open conversation and feel fortunate to live in a world where people can hold different views — and still sit together under the same roof. Everyone is welcome here — Rosita’s is about community, warmth, and hospitality.
“We don’t endorse anyone. We’re simply proud to be a place where people can come together to relax, enjoy themselves, and feel at home.
“We also hope that those who’ve said they won’t visit again will reconsider — you’ll always be very welcome at Rosita’s. We look forward to welcoming you soon.”
Many other comments defended the cafe, with one saying “well done Rosita’s”, while another added “well said”.
Some people claimed the criticism on the post were from “lefties”, with Mr Farage also receiving several positive comments.
One Facebook user wrote: “The triggered lefties on here make my sides split, keep it up Nigel if I pass Rosita’s I’ll definitely be calling in.”
“Get used to it people.. he’s the next guy to lead Great Britain.. got my vote for sure,” wrote another, while a third described Mr Farage as “an absolute legend” and the “next prime minister”.
Mr Farage spent the day clamoured by press photographers and meeting locals, reports WalesOnline.
The by-election in Caerphilly is due to be held on October 23.
