Lee Anderson joked that he was “gutted” after it emerged Gary Lineker is set to leave the BBC’s Match of the Day.
The Reform UK MP, who represents Ashfield, took to social media platform X to share the quip.
Mr Anderson is a fierce critic of the licence fee and has previously taken aim at the BBC’s highest-paid star.
He has lashed out at the football pundit for sharing his political views on social media and for the star’s eye-watering £1.35million salary from the broadcaster.
Mr Lineker’s departure from the flagship football programme is expected to be officially announced by the corporation tomorrow.
The former England footballer will stop presenting the show at the end of this season after 26 years.
The 63-year-old will also leave the BBC after leading coverage of the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.
A BBC source told The Sun: “Gary absolutely adores Match of the Day, and has been incredibly happy at the BBC.
“But he has been at the helm since 1999, and by the time he leaves, he will have been at the Beeb for 30 years.
“He wants to leave on a high – and if England win the World Cup, it doesn’t get much higher.”
The BBC declined to comment.
