Maintaining a healthy green lawn can be difficult during the summer months as the hot weather can have a negative impact. High temperatures can lead to dehydration and stress, resulting in browning, thining, and an overall reduction in lawn health. Though, lawns can most definitely recover from the effects of hot weather, and it is claimed that one natural ingredient can give your lawn a well needed health boost.
Ben Agnew, a lawn expert at Lawnsmith, recommends using seaweed to revive your lawn from any damage.
Ben said: “Seaweed provides a biological boost to your grass. It provides nutrients to improve a lawn’s ability to fight disease, while becoming stronger and greener.
“While it shouldn’t be used instead of a fertiliser, it’s a great supplement for lawns and actually improves how efficiently fertilisers work. It’s an eco-friendly ingredient which enriches soil with organic matter, supporting root growth and improving the absorption of essential nutrients.”
As revealed on Great British Life, seaweed provides many benefits for lawns, such as helping grass withstand environmental stress, improving soil health, and enhancing nutrient absorption. However, it is important to know how to use the ingredient properly.
Ben explained that the seaweed should be applied to the lawn first, followed by a fertiliser a week to a month later.
He added: “You can apply dried seaweed granules by hand or a spreader. Alternatively, dissolve granules in water and spray for faster absorption.
“For a streamlined treatment, use a fertiliser that has seaweed built in. This guarantees your ingredients are balanced and there’s no risk of oversaturation.”
Though the natural ingredient offers a natural boost, gardeners should ensure they do not use too much, as this could have negative effects. Ben shared that it can cause a salty buildup in the soil, hindering water absorption and damaging the roots.
He added: “Too much organic matter from seaweed can cause excessive thatch. But when used correctly, it can be fruitful for your lawn. Providing a rich boost of minerals, including potassium, magnesium, and iron, which all help strengthen grass and improve resistance to fungal infections.”
