The lawn in your garden serves as its main focal point. And although grass is pretty hardy and simple to look after, there are a few things which can really ruin the look of your lawn.
An uneven surface is one of these, as it can make your whole garden look messy and uncared for. It’s a very common issue, especially after the winter, but thankfully it’s an easy fix. That’s according to TikToker Michael the Mediterranean Gardener, who says you can smooth it out fast by following a few simple steps.
In a recent video, he explained exactly how to level out an uneven lawn – and it starts with giving it a good mow.
He recommended doing it down to two or three centimetres, which makes it easier to apply the top dressing and get ‘better visibility’ of any low spots.
Then, mix two parts top soil, two parts sand and one part compost – a combination that’ll really help your grass to flourish.
This mixture is said to provide ‘bulk drainage’ and nutrients, meaning it’ll make your lawn appear more lush and green.
Then, simply spread it all over your grass, or focus just on the low spots if you’d prefer. The next step is the most important part – levelling out the mix.
Michael said: “Use the back of a rake or a lawn-levelling rake to spread the mix evenly. Tread it in, and repeat where necessary.”
Finally, all there’s left to do is water in gently to help the mix settle. And if it’s needed, now is the best time to reseed your lawn too.
The experts at Green Thumb agree that spring is the perfect time to get this task done, because this season offers moist soil from winter and renewed grass growth.
However, you should avoid levelling during heavy rainfall or when the soil is excessively wet, as this can lead to compaction and further damage. Instead, wait for a dry spell when the soil is slightly moist but not overly saturated.
