Lawns will be lush green and free of moss if 1 thing is scattered into soil now

As summer approaches, many gardeners are looking for simple ways to keep their lawns lush and moss-free. The key lies in applying one powerful ingredient to the soil: ferrous sulphate, also known as sulphate of iron. This straightforward treatment not only eliminates moss but also boosts the rich green colour of your lawn.

Moss tends to invade lawns where the soil is poorly drained. Shady spots and lawns cut too short are also vulnerable. To fix this, experts recommend a combination of removing moss and improving lawn health to stop it from coming back.

Start by scarifying the lawn with a rake. This removes the thick layer of moss and dead grass, helping the soil breathe and absorb nutrients more easily. For lawns with heavy moss coverage, scarifying before applying moss killer gives the best results.

Once cleared, apply a moss control product containing ferrous sulphate. Available in both granular and liquid forms, this chemical quickly kills moss while greening up the grass. But be sure to always follow the instructions to prevent over-application or damage to the lawn.

According to the experts at lovethegarden.com: “Once the moss turns black (typically 2-3 weeks after moss killer application), rake it out using a spring-tine rake. This dead moss can gradually be added to your compost heap, layered with other plant material. Check the packaging instructions for details on how long the resulting compost should be left before it is safe to be used in the garden.”

For lasting results, aerate the soil to relieve compaction and cut back any overhanging trees or shrubs that block sunlight. Reseed any bare areas with grass likely to be in the shade, and adopt regular mowing and feeding routines.
