Despite lavender’s preference for nutrient-deficient soil, a modest sprinkle of coffee grounds can provide an ideal nutrient mix that promotes flowering without spurring excessive leaf production, say the experts at World Day. They noted: “The slight acidity and nitrogen content in coffee grounds, when used sparingly, can stimulate them to bloom bigger and healthier.” Acting as a slow-release fertiliser, coffee grounds deliver nitrogen and other minerals over time.
For lavender, which fares better with minimal feeding, this subtle nourishment is just the ticket for encouraging robust spring growth without burdening the plant, reports the Express.
Experts said: “I’ve seen lavender plants produce up to 30% more blooms when treated with coffee grounds compared to untreated plants. The difference is remarkable.”
Stephanie, a gardening guru from the home and DIY blog Celebrated Herb, also endorses the use of coffee grounds for nurturing lavender.
She remarked that spent coffee grounds are an “excellent” source of nitrogen, which is “essential for plant growth”.
But it’s not just lavender that benefits; coffee grounds can also boost the size and colour intensity of hydrangea and rose blossoms.
Simply scatter some coffee grounds around the base of your lavender plants and mix them into the soil.
Alternatively, gardeners can add a layer of well-decomposed compost around the plant’s base, allowing the nutrients to seep into the soil post-watering.
Following the application of coffee grounds, anticipate improved blooms within four to six weeks.
The plants will cultivate stronger stems and larger, more vibrant flower heads.
