The last photo of a woman who disappeared in Greece while her husband slept on a sun lounger has been released. Michele Ann Joy Bourda, 59, was pictured enjoying breakfast at a cafe with her husband just hours before she vanished.
Ms Bourda was last seen lounging on a sunbed at Ofryni beach, Kavala, on Friday. Her husband reportedly woke from a nap to find her gone, with her personal items still on the beach. The image obtained by Greek outlet ANT1 reportedly shows Mrs Bourda eating with her partner at the cafe near the beach where she went missing three hours later.
A large search operation has been launched by Greece’s Hellenic Coast Guard as a missing persons charity warns that the tourist’s life is in danger.
The charity Lifeline Hellas issued an alert which stated: “Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the National SOS Line 1065.”
Ms Bourda is described as having straight blonde hair down to her shoulders, hazel eyes, stands at 1.73m (5ft 6in) tall and has a slim build.
On the day she went missing, she was wearing a two-piece swimsuit adorned with rhinestones, yellow beach shoes and red sunglasses.
Her husband fell asleep on a sun lounger before waking up to find her gone. As he struggled to locate his wife, the distressed man raced to ask a local shop owner if he had seen her.
Speaking to Protothema, the shopkeeper said: “The couple were together and at some point the husband fell asleep and it seems that the wife went in to swim.
“When the husband woke up and didn’t see her next to him, he came to the store and asked us if we had seen his wife, who had disappeared.”
Witnesses describe seeing a woman who matched Ms Bourda’s description in the water, swimming without difficulty between the last confirmed sighting of her and the alarm being raised.
Ms Bourda has been described as active with a passion for hiking and swimming in cold water.
The British Embassy in Greece shared a notice on Facebook which read: “Michele Ann BOURDA went missing on 01/08/2025 at the beach of Ofrynio in Kavala. On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger.”
