The largest Día de los Muertos celebration in the US returned to the City of Angels this weekend.
The Hollywood Forever Cemetery hosted thousands of people Saturday from noon to midnight for the 27th edition of the festival. This year’s theme was “All Under One Sky.”
“Día de los Muertos reminds us that love knows no borders. Memory belongs to us all. Grief belongs to us all. Hope belongs to us all. When we gather to honor our ancestors, we are reminded that every life leaves behind a story — and every story is worthy of being remembered,” the event’s official website said.
People in traditional face paint and vibrant costumes attended the event. The music lineup featured a mix of regional Mexican, indie and traditional performers.
DannyLux headlined the contemporary music roster alongside Trish Toledo, Tropa Magica, Los Shadows, with sets from DJ Que Madre, DJ Joaqu.n and DJ Dro Barlo.
Cultural programs were anchored by Danza Azteca collectives including Cuahutli, Telpochcalli Coyolxauhqui, Sol de Fuego, Tepeyollot Cuautitlan, Nahui Ehecatl, and Coyotl, alongside the Danza de los Voladores de Papantla.
Throughout the day, attendees experienced over 100 community-built altars honoring departed loved ones and watched a ceremonial procession of hundreds of Aztec dancers.
Attendees explored the annual Day of the Dead fine art exhibition, curated by Nery Gabriel Lemus, inside the historic Cathedral Mausoleum, while families and children gathered in the dedicated Children’s Plaza for cultural crafts and storytelling.
