Lanzarote tourist tragedy as car mounts pavement at resort and kills baby

A five-month-old baby has tragically died and several others have been injured in a horrifying incident in the Lanzarote tourist resort of Playa Blanca after a car mounted the pavement, hitting pedestrians.

Local reports suggest that the victims may be British tourists, but the police have not yet confirmed their nationalities. The horrific incident happened around 6.30pm local time near the resort’s Hotel Flamingo.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and an air ambulance, rushed to the scene. Two women survivors are reported to be seriously injured, and another three people have also been hurt.

The woman who was driving the car that hit the pedestrians reportedly told police she had a problem with her steering. The police launched a full investigation last night.

At this stage, there is no suggestion that it is being investigated as a terror incident, reports the Mirror.

Last September, seven people, including two British tourists, were injured when a British holidaymaker drove into a busy Spanish cafe terrace on the neighbouring Canary island of Fuerteventura. The casualties included a four-month-old baby girl.

This happened in the tourist hotspot of Corralejo. Last month, an 83-year-old British tourist sadly died after being hit by a bus in Lanzarote.

She was in a “critical” state on February 21 after being struck by a vehicle in the popular holiday spot of Costa Teguise and was stabilised at the scene.
