Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has sent a message to women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka after confirmation of a ‘Battle of the Sexes’ contest. The two will face each other in an exhibition match in Dubai in December.

Injuries have reduced Kyrgios’ action in recent years, last playing back in March in the Miami Open. He has played just six matches since October 2022, a few months after his Wimbledon final appearance against Novak Djokovic that summer.

The match between Kyrgios and Sabalenka is being billed as the Battle of the Sexes, referencing the famous 1973 match between Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs. King won the match in straight sets.

Upon the announcement, Kyrgios has taken to social media to send messages to Sabalenka, with whom he shares an agent. On his Instagram story he wrote: “The moment I’ve been waiting for.” In the comments section of the post announcing the game, he also wrote: “LETS GET IT SABA.”

It is expected that there will be some modifications to the match rules, including Krygios only being allowed one serve. The match is due to take place on 28 December and will be played at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.

Krygios has said it was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. “When the world No 1 challenges you, you answer the call,” he said. “I’ve got massive respect for Aryna; she’s a powerhouse and a true champion.

“But I’ve never backed down from a challenge, and I’m not just here to play, I’m here to entertain. This is what I live for.”

Sabalenka has also sent a warning to her opponent ahead of the match. “I have a lot of respect for Nick and his talent, but make no mistake, I’m ready to bring my A-game,” she said.

“I have so much respect for Billie Jean King and what she has done for the women’s game,” Sabalenka added. “I’m proud to represent women’s tennis and to be part of this modern take of the iconic Battle of the Sexes match.”
