King Charles made a worrying nine-word remark to Queen Camilla as they arrived in Italy for their two-day visit to the Vatican, a lip-reader has claimed. The King and Queen arrived in Rome on Wednesday evening, when they landed at Ciampino Airport.
Charles was said to be proud that his state visit to the Vatican would stand as a symbol of the unifying journey Anglicans and Catholics are making in a troubled world. Today, the royal couple made a series of appearances in Vatican City, where Charles became the first British monarch to pray at a service with the Pope since the Reformation.
However, despite carrying all of their engagements with effortlessness and ease, the King appeared to give a warning to his wife on their arrival, according to a lip reader.
Lip-reading expert Nicola Hickling said while speaking to Betfair Casino: “As King Charles and Queen Camilla step out of the plane doors, the King could be seen turning to his wife, cautioning her, ‘You ought to be careful going down the steps.’
“Ironically, just as he spoke, he appeared to lose his own footing before quickly steadying himself and making a brisk recovery.”
The royal couple were formally welcomed by representatives from the Holy See, the government of the Roman Catholic Church in the Vatican.
They were greeted by Christopher Trott, British ambassador to the Holy See and Monsignor Javier Domingo Fernandez Gonzalez, Vatican City Head of the Protocol Office
According to Ms Hickling, while speaking to those waiting to greet them, the King lightened the atmosphere by saying to an officer or pilot, “You have the same name as me, you’re also a Charles. I see.”
The man allegedly said “Absolutely,” before the King added: “Marvellous journey… It’s wonderful to be able to come back to Rome, and what a warm welcome.”
The lip reader also said that the King said afterwards: “We’re going to go for a walk.”
