King Charles has been warned that he will “be judged” by how he handles the bitter feud with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Duke, 40, and Duchess of Sussex, 43, have been feuding with the royals for some time – with tensions heightening after they stepped down as senior working royals in 2020.
Harry reportedly used the recent “peace talks” to offer an olive branch to his family – in particular his father. The King’s second-born son is said to have offered to send his official diary to his family to avoid any future clashes in engagements. This comes after Harry’s recent visit took place as the family celebrated Queen Camilla’s birthday on July 17. This later led to Harry’s visit knocking Camilla’s portrait off the front pages of the papers.
Writing in a piece for the Telegraph, journalist Eleanor Mills shared that she believes the King will be the one being “judged” by how he reacts to Meghan and Harry – and how he handles everything going forward in relation to the ongoing tensions. She wrote: “This is a time for the Royal Family to pull together; to let bygones be bygones. Come on, Charles, show some true statesmanship, befitting your role as the head of the Church of England, and forgive Harry and Meghan before it is too late.”
Discussing how she feels people would react, she added: “That is the yardstick by which you will be judged. We may not all be kings, but we all know what family is about.
“Harry is trying to meet you on the territory that you most care about [your royal image] – it’s up to you as King, but most importantly as his father, to bury the hatchet.”
Encouraging the monarch to be the one to spearhead a reconciliation, she concluded: “Come on, Charles, be the grown-up, the paterfamilias, and get off your high horse… There’s no time like the present.”
Since stepping down from royal duties, Meghan and Harry now reside in California with their children – Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4.
Speaking of his life in the US, Harry previously said during The New York Times DealBook Summit: “I very much enjoy living here and bringing my kids up here.”
