After his accession, Frederik delivers a speech from the balcony, saying: “My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow. It’s a task I’ve been waiting for all my life.
“It is a responsibility I take on with respect, pride and great joy. It is a deed I will take pains to carry out and carry through the position I have been entrusted with. I need all the support I can get.
“From my beloved wife, from my family, from you and from that which is greater than us. I face the future knowing that I am not alone.
“Bound, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark.”
The day was filled with regal glory all over the country, as the Danes celebrated their new monarch and bid farewell to another.
During her annual New Year’s Eve address, Queen Margrethe shocked the world when she revealed her plans to abdicate.
She said the reason for her decision was down to her health and thoughts she had had after undergoing back surgery at the start of 2023.
In the speech, she said that she felt it was “time to pass the responsibility on to the next generation”.
