King Charles’s trip to the US to meet Donald Trump rests on one key thing | Royal | News

Reports that King Charles and Queen Camilla are planning a trip to the US have been downplayed, with a friend of the couple suggesting the trip rests on the monarch’s health.

It has now been reported that no plans have been made and that there is “no formal invitation” in the calendar.

A friend of the King and Queen told the Daily Beast that while Charles would be keen in principle to participate in any UK charm offensive toward President Trump, “any such plans remain entirely contingent on his ongoing cancer treatment.”

A source also said that there was, therefore, no intel to share “beyond the usual position that there remains, as ever, a willingness to travel when and where required subject to the normal process and diary prioritization review—none of which has been undertaken, still less approved, for 2026.”

Foreign trips for members of the Royal Family are subject to the approval and planning of the Foreign Office.

Despite this, sources have suggested that King Charles would be open to visiting the US if the couple were invited.

They did stress, however, that such visits only occur at the British government’s request and discretion.

As a well-established protocol to ensure royal visits serve diplomatic rather than personal purposes, the monarch does have some input. Despite this, they ultimately act at the behest of government officials as dictated by the constitutional monarchy’s structure.

These comments come after it was reported that President Trump has no plans to deport Prince Harry, the King’s youngest son, out of the US.

Amid an ongoing legal battle over his immigration status, Trump told the New York Post earlier this month: “I don’t want to do that. ‘I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”

Trump is said to be aware at the stress this would cause the Royal Family and out of “respect” for the King – he made the decision to allow him to stay in America.

A source recently told The Sun: “Having him back in the UK is actually harder than having him kept away in the USA.”
