King Charles was brutally mocked by one of the US’s biggest TV hosts after the monarch gave a historic speech at Canada’s Parliament in what was widely viewed as a show of support in the face of annexation threats by US President Donald Trump. The King, who is also the head of state of Canada, did not name-drop Mr Trump but said that the country is facing unprecedented challenges in a world that’s never been more dangerous.
He also reaffirmed Canada’s sovereignty, saying the “True North is indeed strong and free”.
But, while Charles’s speech was hailed by many royal watchers worldwide, US TV host Jimmy Kimmel mocked it, downplaying its impact. He said on his Jimmy Kimmel Live! show: “Trump isn’t the only elder statesman with a friend in need.
“King Charles was in Canada today to show his support for the Commonwealth during this difficult time.
“The King gave an uncharacteristically fiery speech this morning in front of the Canadian Parliament.”
Footage of the King was then shown as he attempted to turn pages of his speech.
Mr Kimmel added: “Won’t someone please come lick the royal thumb?
“Next, I want him to try to open a Capri Sun. So then, once he was able to pry the manila envelope pages apart, the King spoke not only with power, but also with grace.”
More footage from the monarch’s speech was shown, with Charles saying: “Every time I come to Canada, a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream and from there straight to my heart.”
The TV host remarked: “Gross.”
According to reports, Mr Trump seemed to respond to the King’s visit last week, writing that if Canada becomes the “cherished 51st State”, it won’t have to pay to join his future Golden Dome missile defence program.
He wrote on his social media: “It will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”
